External Academic Degree Program Students pursue for-credit courses in a user-friendly format that has the adult learner in mind. Once enrolled in courses, the student orders textbooks and study guide, along with other course materials from the ORU bookstore. The study guide is a road map to the course's three major assignments, which are mailed to the School of LifeLonge Education about every 4 weeks. At the conclusion of the third assignment, the student prepares to take a final exam, which is proctored by a qualified individual in the student's area. Courses in the External Academic Degree Program lead to the Bachelor of Science degree in four majors: Business Administration, Christian Care and Counseling, Church Ministries, and Liberal Studies. Elementary Education with Certification (Degree Completion Program), B.S.Ed. As Christian schools raise teacher requirements in order to meet accreditation standards, private school teachers are faced with the need for a degree. The ORU School of Education (in conjunction with the School of LifeLong Education) has created this program to satisfy that need and also to train those wanting to teach in the public school arena with a Christ-based philosophy. Students complete two-thirds of this degree through correspondence courses and the remaining third in residence by attending the School of Education Summer Institute or by transfer credit. Courses are taught by full-time ORU Education faculty, including the department's dean and associate dean. In addition to ORU's regional accreditation, this degree is accredited by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation (OCTP) and the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE). This is a degree completion program; therefore, the ORU School of Education will only accept applicants who have fulfilled the minimum requirement of general education coursework. For details on the required general education courses, see the degree plan for the Exploratory major above. For more detailed information on the program, please visit the ORU School of Education website or contact Richard Berumen in the School of Education (rberumen@oru.edu).
External Exploratory Major (Does Not Lead to a Degree) The Exploratory major is designed with two purposes in mind: (1) to guide students who are not yet ready to declare a major and (2) to help potential Elementary Education with Certification (Degree Completion Program) students gain the general education credits required by the ORU School of Education. The Exploratory major does not lead to a degree; rather, it is a way for students to complete their required general education courses before declaring a major. The Liberal Studies major requires that students pursue at least two distinct areas of emphasis with an interdisciplinary format.
